Anyone have a CHUMBY yet ? Answered

The CHUMBY article
And the CHUMBY device site itself

Physically, the device is just plain cute. The 3.5 inch display is enclosed in a padded leather beanbag that can be smushed to sit at different angles. In addition to the touch screen, there's one switch at the top and a 3D accelerometer in the unit, which some games use. The device also has two USB ports, for users who want to hack it; the BIOS and schematics are open source and the product is based on Linux. The Chumby site even encourages people to take apart their unit and reassemble it in new ways.

I started a topic a while ago about the chumby. It looks really really cool! I would love to get one. If I did get one I would want an Orb widget but they don't have one right now. Maybe if I learn flash I can make the widget.

Oh sorry, had I known, I would have just added my article to your thread. I got notification of the Chumby from ZNET and didn't really check to see if anyone else had put something up on it or not.

Thats ok. I don't mind. Let me know if you get a chumby. Maybe you can write a review for the forums.

I don't currently have a job (I am 14) but I do sell cheap crap I buy on the internet to kids at school. I buy these tv remotes that control any tv for $2.15 (bulk discount) and sell them for $6. I make pretty good money that way. I guess I only need to sell about 47 remotes to pay for it. Not bad.

Well, I am not much of a salesman myself. I am more like the geek behind the scenes that has troubles just talking with customers LOL

No joke, no joke. I hate the door to door salesmen, but I got to say the Jehovah's witness people are worse. Don't get me wrong, its cool if your a jehovah's witness but I don't want too or feel the need to join a religion right no so they stop leaving papers all over my front door.

One day I am going to be like " you have arrived just in time for a satanic ritual held by my under ground cult in my basement. Would you like to join in on the fun?" or something along those lines. idk

Oh, I know a little flash but not enough to create and orb widget right now. Last summer before i had ever seen an Iphone in real life i created virtual one in flash. I did not know how to navigate with an iphone so it is really werid. I added a bunch of extra buttons.
if you go to the notes part on the phone and click on the speaker above the screen there is a secret message.
Here is the link

I was personally looking at iPod clock radios with far less functionality around the same price point when I discovered chumby. Besides all the great widgets and information, now I get a digital photo viewer included along with my iPod functionality. I do love my chumby (pearl version)!

I find I use my chumby’s weather channel widget just about the most, especially living in Chicago where we’re currently getting hit my numerous snowstorms. My wife and I also like the cute Screen Clean widget a lot, and Chuck Norris Facts are always good, not to mention widgets for My Traffic Conditions or the news sources like Google, Engadget, or CNET. There is now also a sleep sound generator in case you like white noise for sleeping. All in all, chumby becomes quite the useful and entertaining tool, fulfilling many different functions.

If you do get your hands on a chumby, within the control panel, Shoutcast has some really good music streams. My company, Mediafly, also has its service embedded in the chumby control panel. Mediafly brings channels of informational media that customize passively based upon your listening habits…or you can personalize your channels yourself a la carte, finding content (podcast format) on virtually any subject at www.mediafly.com. The self-customization is still in Alpha, but let us know what you think. Instructions for this are at http://mediafly.typepad.com/cvconant_tech_insights/2008/01/personalize-the.html

Of course, you can also check out Mediafly on your own, as well, even if you don’t have a chumby *yet*  http://www.mediafly.com/Welcome.aspx?msfrc=instructables

In the end, I really do strongly recommend the chumby if anyone’s thinking of getting one. For all the different functions (and future features) a chumby brings, it ends up being a pretty nice value for the money.

No prob...I do really love mine and use it every day at home. too bad you can't pick them up on the secondary market (like eBay) for a discount- most listed there actually go for more than list price due to the folks from other countries who want to buy one. (chumby only currently ships directly to US addresses, due to regulatory and other issues.)

I've been looking at them for some time. They're adorable and really very interesting. I might have to invest in one at some point. So many neat features!

I think I am going to have to delay my investing in one for a bit. I am still trying to save up to go to a nearby convention for a few days (*sigh*)

Well, currently I do not have $180. So, the answer to your question is...no. Hopefully I can make some money over the summer and purchase some of the "wants" that are on my list.
