Arduino 1.01 vs anti virus

So I downloaded Arduino 1.01 from the link provided at the Arduino website and then my anti virus software ate it... I mean, said it was unsafe, malicious and removed it from my computer. Anyone else have this issue?  Is the software safe and my anti virus software (norton 360 2012) just stupid or is it actually malicious?

We no longer use Microsoft based products. In the over 15 years as a Microsoft Windows admin, I have seen many a time where a virus detection program will give a false positive. Get a second opinion as they say.

I installed it and it completely messed up my pc.

There is no problem with the IDE. Its been live for many months now without any real issues. If your PC got messed up then it was from something else.

Did you download the IDE directly from the Arduino web site? If you also had an anti virus program take it out it may have taken out another key file in your system. Its not uncommon for commercial anti virus programs to get a new set of definitions and then wrongly ID a key bit of system software as malicious and take it out.

IMHO is you have to pay for the anti virus protection then its not worth it. There are many great options that are free. Most notably Microsoft's Security Essentials. Its free from MS and since its from MS your not likely to get a false positive that kills Windows.
