Battery Powered Computer Lights Answered

I have this item left over from my computer modding days. A set of cathode lights, there is two small rods, which connect to a main box, which then plugs into molex connecter for power. What i need help with, is can i hook this up to a battery, and if yes, how do i go about it? I have some experience of soldering. So i shouldn't be too lost. Thanks in advance. Gmj,

the inverter (circuit) may use 12 or 5 V try to stick the header from the cathode and the supply into each other a bit tilted so that only 2 of the pins make contact each time if red wire made it - 5 V if yellow made it - 12 V if both needed - either 7 or it actualy needs both open the inverter and see the circuit inside. if its fairly simple then it usually accepts a wide range of voltages and not too strict most of those circuits take spikes of high current and not constant low current. if you use batteries with low resistancce (like rechargeable batteries) or atleast connect a capacitor in parallel you may get better performance an inverter is not complex (in its simplest edition its just 3 components). you can build one yourself if you have to. some trial and error can give you feeling of what inverter needs to work well

you plug it in to a computer power supply and test ! to power the supply on without computer connect green to black in the mainboard header

. If it's using the red and yellow wires on the 4-pin peripheral connector, then you need a ~7V battery (12V-5V). http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#peripheral

Do i buy a ~7volt then? or do i need to make it from cells?

. Four (6V) or five (7.5V) C cells may work. I'm not familiar with cold cathode lights, so I don't know how picky they are about power. . If it's not using red/yellow, as it looks like in the pic, then it will be 5V or 12V. You need to verify before applying power.

. A quick and dirty search shows that most of these run on 12V. Any 12V battery that will supply enough current should work.

. Can't tell without knowing how much current the light draws. As a rule of thumb, the larger the physical size of the battery, the more current it will supply.
. Those would probably work, but I'm guessing they won't last long.
