Best way to wire these LED's? Answered

I am working on a project, basically I want to have 5 or 6 10mm green LED's hooked up to a 9 volt battery. How would I wire this up, series or parallel?



You don't need 9V to power 6 LEDs. If you wire them up in series and parallel a 4 pack of AAs will work. Or make your own battery pack that can hold 3x 3V coin cell batteries.

1) Never use 9 volt batteries unless your arm is being twisted by a terrorist.
2) Use the wizard. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz

Get a suitable battery pack - 3-12 volts (2-9 AAA, AA, C, or D batteries in series) - a battery holder is WAY better than a 9-volt.

Enter that value as your source voltage
Green will have 3 volt (ish) drop - look it up for your specific leds.
10mm leds are usually 20-40mA forward current. Look it up for your specific leds.
total leds - go nuts.

But for the actual LEDs would series allow more or would parralel, or have the best effeciency

Also, I don't think there is room for a battery pack with that many, 9 volt is really the only way to do this, unles you have a way to make one of those connectors that works around something turning that would somehow work on a bike tire.

You can EASILY fit a battery pack on a bike tire -- you want it near the hub so it experiences less g force.

again...the wizard will tell you what is most efficient for your battery pack.

But the only ones here are 4 AA, and with that I wont be able to mount LED's all around, with a 9 volt I can ahve it inside a hose clamp and LEDs around the outside.

Sigh, if only slip rings were easy to make properly.

Also, I would need two 4 AA battery packs to get the 12 volts :(

Yeah, I need a way to make a slip ring that would work on a bycicle tire.

Find a cheap mobile phone battery.

I say again...9 volt batteries are total crap. There is less total energy in one than 2 AAA batteries (generally) - they are hard to source, (expensive), don't last long, aren't ideal for higher current, harder still to find rechargable versions...

Trust me. 4xaa 6xaa 8xaa hell, even 2x 2xaa (on either side of the hub) would give you 6 volts, and thats LOTS to work with, and would last a LONG time without changing the batteries.
