Sure. If they can get it to market and make their money before you get a chance to build up a rock-solid patent. Even if they don't, patents and copyrights don't mean that much these days. Take almost any "As seen on TV" product and wait a couple of months. The original and five or six knock-offs will be in stores, often at the same time.

Good point,i've noticed that myself. it's a shame. I've also found out over the years that you have to have money to make money. A tech friend of mine was in a motorcycle accident and is now pretty much a vegitable. He had a room full of million dollar prototypes. He never had the money to go through the patent process and now all of his projects are in the bottom of a landfill.

Go open source, wide open. Allow anyone to build one. Show them how to do it. If someone makes a few bucks, good for them, but there'll be nothing stoping anyone from making their own.

As GF said, patents are not worth much these days, even if you have hordes of lawyers. The only thing they are good for is one company delaying the other companies for just long enough that the original one can get quickly make a lot of money and then get out of the business (or come up with the New and Improved version). If you are an individual inventor without hordes of lawyers, a patent is pretty much worthless except as an ego boost. (Not that that is a bad thing, but there are cheaper ways.) If you do go open source, you might get better protection than hordes of lawyers; you could end up with hordes of angry geeks, definitely a force to be reckoned with. If you have a product that appeals primarily with geeks and develop a loyal following, they could save you from being ripped off.

If you have built and anti-gravity unit, do not write up an Instructable on it.

Instead, build it into the wheels of a double-decker bus and fly it past the cameras of a BBC outside broadcast - investors will be chewing each others' arms off to give you money.

(ah, you seem to have unstuck CAPS LOCK) If you haven't made this yet, no one can copy it. If you really think it's worth something invest in protecting it legally before you release the idea to the world. L

OOOO OK lol. i gotta check into the patent process. I spend too much time inventing and not enough time trying to acquire wealth. Tinkering is more addictive than crack.

No. They can copy what you write, but certainly won't become a billionaire.
