CMOS Battery options Answered

Can I replace the CMOS battery on my motherboard with a holder soldered in holding 2 aaa alkaline batteries instead of having to use CR2032 batteries?

WHY would you want to do that??
A proper CR2032 as a backup for settings and clock will last about 5-7 years.
Alkaline batteries about 3 before encounter leaking and corrosion on your motherboard.

I have alkaline batteries that are suppose to be good to 2024, or is that just the shelf life?

Shelf life means they will still have a usable charge by 2024 - or you could hope they have.
Problem is that they are not really designed for that kind of application as the usage is only slightly over the self discharge ratio.
Keep in mind your cmos battery only needs to provide backup power when the computer is off.
And since you will only loose the settings but not the actual bios I still see no benefit at all.
Considering the costs and work involved I would not take the chance and just replace the CR with a quality one and forget about it ;)
