Can't reply to comment or post a new comment on my own Instructable Answered

Hey there,

Has anyone else had issues with posting or replying on their own instructable?
At first an error message would appear "words not matching" for the Recapcha even though the ReCapcha mini-window wasn't displayed (but the  change-word option tag was visible).
Now there is no ReCapcha as well as I can't post a response or new comment on my instructable.

I don't get the Captcha in IE 9 at work or Firefox/Chrome/IE 10 at home.

If you can leave a comment then you may have solved the Captcha already. Try clearing your cache and refreshing the page and leaving a reply to my comment.

See Mikeasaurus' comment - you may have fixed the issue yourself, clear your cache, refresh the page and try again.

I am also unable to reply to comments. When I try, I get the "type text from image" alert with no image to work from. There is a working captcha at the end of the article for posting new comments, but entering it's text in it's box does not help me reply to existing comments. I am using Chrome v.28 on Windows XP, have freshly booted the machine, and have cleared my cache in an attempt to correct the problem (to no avail)..

Thanks for the suggestion. I see from another posted I don't get the Captcha because I have a Pro membership. After another few days I was able to post again and am not having any problems now. I don't think I went through a cache clean or reboot, but it's possible. I'll try to remember that if it happens again.

Thanks

Try just leaving a comment next to the Captcha (instead of replying to a comment), this will solve the Captcha and remove it from appearing again. After posting your first comment on a project, refresh the page and then try leaving a reply.

The workaround does not work, I read and tried the same two days ago. In the screen shot you might be able to see the "test" comment that worked and then the reply that failed.

Now one funny thing happened once and only once: The captcha widget showed up below the reply form as it should.

Does anybody still develop / maintain this website? You can't expect your average users to find such workarounds. Also anyone ever tried to use the site in IE? You can't even click on the login menu because of a z-index issue. Not that I love IE, but you loose a good chunk of potential users from the get go. Hire the right people ;)

Looks like you got it working, as I you left this reply and I can see a top-level comment, too. I've reported the IE header overlay as a bug, but does this mean the commenting works correctly for you now?

I got a free upgrade to PRO. After that all captcha boxes disappeared for good and I can reply as much as I like.

However I have little doubt that this is a wide spread issue. In this thread alone you see 2 people apologize for not being able to reply:

https://www.instructables.com/id/Cheap-Sturdy-1-Hour-Quadcopter/

If you still have developers maintaining the site, you should definitely file this as a bug.

Just an FYI of how login looks for IE users. I was able to click it by clicking one pixel below the menu bar :) But yes, the captcha issue exists on FF, Chrome and IE.

I don't have the problem with commenting on instructables, but I can't reply on a comment, because I don't have the captcha box for replies, so I can't post a reply without it complaines about missing words. I have the text that normaly is under the box, but that's it. I'm running Win8 64bit with Chrome, i have tried disabling AdBlock and clearing browser cache, without result other than the need to typing login info to every forum I'm on. Which by the way is really annoying.

Since the last release we've noticed some issues with Chrome displaying our site. It sometimes works if you refresh a couple of times, but I've just switched over to Firefox for now.
We're reolling out another release that will hopefully fix it for Chrome soon.

I've tried Internet Explorer and Firefox (the newest versions), and I've the same annoying issue in all browsers. Only on this site. No matter if Adblock Plus is installed or not. This is really frustrating and take away some of the site's charm.

Cannot reply because the captcha is not displayed below the form. I see the captcha for posting a comment, but not the one needed to reply. This happenes for me on FF and Chrome.

This was driving me nuts, but at least I now know it is not on my end.
Couldn't post in the box at the end of the comments, (what Captcha - I can't see no captcha)
But it did post using the box at the top of the comments.
FF 19 W7/64, also IE8. tried disabling add-ons & firwall/virus, no difference.

@Michael_oz
You will only need to solve the Captcha once. If you don't see it, then you may have solved it once before already. If you can't leave a comment and don't see a Captcha then make sure you don't have any browser add-ons running that might inhibit the site from loading entirely.

Can you provide a screen capture of where you can't leave a comment please?

'ible https://www.instructables.com/id/3D-Printed-Photograph/
has lots of comments. At the top of the comment section there is a box to post a comment, it works, e.g. Clicking Rich Editor changes to the rich editor.
At the bottom of the first page of comments, there is another box to post comments. See attached screen shot. None of the buttons do anything. Yesterday I went thru the process of disabling add-ons & firewalls etc, I doubt it is related to those.

Any add-on that prevents portions of the page loading will produce results like this. Please disable all browser add-ons, log out, clear your browser cache, and log back in. Then, try leaving a comment. If you see the Captcha again leave a top comment (not a reply) and solve the Captcha, that will authenticate you and you shouldn't see it again.

As I said, did all that yesterday. So I just did it all again...
Disabled all relevant add-ons (yes I know which ones do what), logged out, cleared cache, login, try leaving a comment.
No captcha.
Buttons at top comment box work.
Buttons at bottom comment box don't.

I looked at the source, it looks complete.

It does not really help. Maybe if I post a regular post on the same day as I want to post a reply to someone. But I still have the same problem on an instructable which I have previously posted in.

You should only have to complete the Captcha once. Then you can reply and post anywhere. Make sure you have cookies enabled on your browser.

I have this problem too. It will allow me to make new comments, but I am unable to reply to any because it tells me the captcha words need to be entered, even when they are right in the box.

Please try clearing your browser cache, then logging back in to the site again. Press crtl+0 (apple+0) to reset your text size to default, then load up the page you want to comment on again. Did that solve it?

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

user
colorrot (author)mikeasaurus2013-04-23

No. Interesting note though: When I clear my cache & history, re-login (& reset text size), enter in the captcha and submit a response; I will get the captcha error and the captcha will change. Then if I answer the new captcha and submit again, the captcha will not change and remains the same no matter how many times I try to post my comment.

I'm having this problem as well and it's really grinding my gears. Clearing cache has no effect. If I type into the captcha that's at the top of the comment section (as there is no box near my reply to an author), it still does not work. Tried this several times.

Using Windows 8 64bit with Google Chrome.
