How do you deal with a co worker who does all the work and won't share any of it? I try to do as much as I can, but I feel like my two co workers are just moving on without me not giving me a chance to do any solid work. Our project has a lot of coding in it, but I'm not good at programming. Still, I wish they would let me know what they were doing and if there was anything I could do to help. All I end up doing is working on documents, presentations, and maybe sometimes I'll wire together a circuit. Which is not what I want to do. I want to do something that is actually related to engineering... Any advice would be great.


We're students working on a senior design project. We're working on making a different type of computer mouse.

You should have something like a "team meeting" regularly where you can discuss these things. But if you're the documents, presentations, and maybe sometimes a circuit -person, do your best at that and let them do their best at coding, it's a joint effort with division-of-labour. It strikes me that you're producing more tangible-work anyway...


Yea, at the next meeting I'll mention the division of labor. I think next semester I'll be doing more engineering type work working on PCB design. So I'm happy. Thanks for the advice!

Secondly, allot of real world engineering is about reporting what has been done or what has to be done. I help design everything from harbours to breweries and most of my time is documentation..

Yea, I guess I do need to talk to them about it. I just didn't want confrontation. They're both good friends of mine too, so I guess it won't be too bad. Now that I think about it, they probably aren't trying to take all the work, but rather just get the project done as soon as possible.

If you dont talk to them how do you expect them to know what you want to do? What orviseatsapples said is right, prepare. Also keep in mind that confrontation does not have to lead to conflict. If they are your friends talk to them like friends.

The best thing to know before confronting someone with a problem is what you want the resolution to be. What do you intend on getting of the situation by talking to them? What do you think their responses will be? It's paramount to know this before diving into a serious conversation like confronting coworkers about projects. Otherwise, you'll be flying blind through the conversation, leaving them the opportunity to steer you off topic and leaving your concerns unresolved.
