Creating patches Answered

I see we can upload our own patches to send to other people. What makes a "patch"? What are the size and format limits? Are there any style guidelines (the current patches all have a square border with rounded corners).

On my profile, it says that I have 1 patch left to send. How do I get more patches to send out, or is 1 my limit?

If you run a patch contest, you can ask for more.

I did that and it was so much fun! ( I wonder if I could request more for another one in a little while...)

In the future, non-pro members will be able to buy or earn patches to give away. We're currently thinking that they will be priced at $1 each. How you'll earn them is undecided, but getting an Instructable featured or appearing in the newsletter are two things we're considering.

Have you considered giving away patches to give away (someone has got to coin a term for those) as part of the standard prize pack of T-shirt, stickers and physical patch?

I got some extra patches for having one of my Instructables featured.

Really? From the Ible staff or from other users? I've gotten a couple for being in the newsletter, but not for being featured.

They expire after a bit, don't they? Could that be it or shall we call Scotland Yard? ; )

Call the Yard. Someone has obviuosly napped the patch for its value on the blackmarket.

You should see what they are going for on ebay.

I've never been in the newsletter. It was someone on staff, I believe. I was given extra patches to give away, not just achievement patches. How many do you get for going pro? I can then tell you how many extra I have now.

With the 2 year membership you get 40 patches to give out. I think with the one year you get 15, and then the monthly deal you a single patch for each month you're a member.

I got the one year. I have 22 and have sent 3. Looks like they gave me ten. Now I really wish I wasn't so diligent lately about cleaning out my email inbox. Either that or I wish my memory was better.

I think it was for being featured. Or maybe it was popular. One of those, I believe. Either way it wasn't just for being a neat guy. ; ) I just tried, but I can't find the original email I got about it. Sorry if I'm just mucking up the works here.

If you're giving patches a monetary value, $1 each, perhaps you'd also consider letting people save up patches earnt from winning competitions and getting featured to spend on pro membership? Since them creating quality featurable content benefits the site, why shouldn't it benefit them too? Maybe 5-10 patches earnt from featured articles could earn users 1-2 months membership and keep the quality ibles coming!

I have had the idea of content-rebates (which I posted somewhere but is going to take me too long to find) I'm with you on that one. L

How exclusive do you want them to be? Also, would that replace receiving a patch for being in the newsletter?

There are achievements and patches. Achievements can only be given by admins, and we're reserving use of those for winners of contests and Instructables that appear in the newsletter.

Just for reference, if you want to make a pixel-perfect patch like the staff ones, the resultant image is (at the moment) 48x48 pixels. If you make a patch out of a large, high-detail image it's worth resizing it to 48x48 to see how it will look on their member page. Simple, striking designs work best.

It's up to you. We'll resize the image to be square, but you can see the full sized image on the patch's page, here for example.
