A Newton's cradle - Yes.  A working Newton's cradle . . . Tricky.
The problem with K'nex is that Newton's laws act on the cradle as well, and because K'nex structures flex you would lose a lot of energy with movement  of the frame which would damp the ball swing.  You may get a couple of clicks of the balls, but I'd expect the oscillation to die away after a few swings.

You're correct. They do look like a bean shape. I'm not sure what they are. They don't seem like a K'nex part? Regardless, for an effective Newton's Cradle, those items should be round. ;-)

If the balls weren't KNEX and you hung them on threads or similar, yes.
