My serial monitor looks nothing like your example. I get an exception 3. Attached is a screen print from the serial monitor.

Hm. Try a different USB port for powering your board, some may supply more current than others. Power issues can cause strange behavior and the ESP8266 uses a lot of it (for instance the moment it fires up its wireless radio). I'm trying to recreate the error you're getting but so far an unable to. What type of computer/OS are you using, and could you send me a link to the product page for your board?

Using Win7 Pro 64 bit. The board came from China so I don't have any documentation on it other than what is printed on the board: 1) install CH340G driver, 2) use 9600 bps baud rate, 3) connect to wifi
