As far as I recall, the monolith was created by a higher intelligence.  It is a multi-purpose device.  It is responsible for causing humans to discover the use of tools, and later on it acts as an interstellar transport device.  It does more than that, though.

It's been a while since I've read those books...

Now that you read the book you should see the movies, that will really confuse you.

jeff-o is right. It explains in the books how the aliens that created the monolith was a higher intelligence that evenually discovered a way to stor thoughts in the fabric of spacetime thus not needing material body's.

The monolith was used to give early humans an evolutianary "kick in the pants"  so to speak.

If you recall the monolith was as dense as air when they weighed it, thus, it was more of an optical illusion gaurded by a force feild than a material block, thus once the virus deactivated it it vanished.

And yes, it was full of stars :)

Oh my God, it's full of stars!

I think that's about it.

It's a book.  Arthur is a writer.  Arthur had a dream one night.  Arthur needed money so he wrote a book about that dream.  It's like modern art, you have to explain it for yourself.
