Firefix dictionary add-on Answered

Picture of

The FireFox British dictionary v1.19 is incompatible with the latest version of FF itself.

Any ideas on where to get an up-to-date version?

.  Will this dictionary work for you?
.  Found it by going to the FF Add-Ons page and searching for "dictionary UK".

That's the one I was using, until the automatic updates of FF rendered it incompatible.

Try the old trick for installing "outdated" addons - type "about:config" into the address bar. Make a new entry: Right click, New>Boolean. Set the name to "extensions.checkCompatibility", and the value to false

Restart Firefox, rejoice. ;)

.  That sounds like a Best Answer to me, but I have a feeling that Mr. "God Save The Queen" Kiteman will disagree. ;)

I just tested this for you and it seems like you can replace the default US English dictionary with the British one by copying the two files from the add on called "en-GB" one is an AFF file and one is a DIC file(in windows XP they are at C:\Documents and Settings\(USER NAME)\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\canurdi4.default\extensions\en-GB@dictionaries.addons.mozilla.org\dictionaries) copy the two en-GB to C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\dictionaries and delete the en-US files and the next time you start Firefox it should use the new Dictionary.

install the nightly builders add-on and that should allow you to install "incompatible" plugins. it may not be 100% but it will allow you to install it
and if that doesnt work, try using Opera, or Safari
