Gimp Help: Colour to Transperancy? Answered

In The GIMP, is there a way to turn a colour (for example, white) into transperancy while leaving all the other colours alone? Thanks!

Is there a well-defined boundary? If so, select the region you want to make transparent, cut and paste it to a new layer, and reduce the opacity of that layer. Then, merge said layer back into the original.

Thanks. What I ended up doing is creating a new transparent layer underneath the original, and then using the "select by colour" tool to select the colour I wanted to remove, and hit edit>clear. I didn't bother merging the layers, though. Once I get my image uploads working I'll post a pic of what I did.
