you have a blown head gasket, also valves should be replaced, complete head assembly with gasket approx. 110.00.had the same thing on 18.5 hp briggs and could'nt find any help so I bought a new engine.then took the old one apart everything else was fine.

something is leaking pressure from the engine into the casing where the oil sits - that pressure has to go somewhere, and its out the dip stick. Stuck valve, cracked casing, a few possibilities.

my exhaust valve was stuck partially closed and it allowed some of the exhaust to be forced into the crank case. i let the motor run and squirted a little tranny fluid into the carb. LOTS of smoke then the valve came unstuck.

righto - it was more a reply to the op, but you conveniently supported it :D sounds like our guest just needs to overhaul the engine :D

Have you filled with the correct amount of oil? Like others have suggested, I'd guess broken piston-rings. However I don't understand the "FUEL PUMP" reference - it doesn't have one - what are you referring to? L

. Sounds like bad rings or a scored cylinder wall to me.
