DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO BUILD A SIMPLE PERGOLA?
try this: http://tinyurl.com/m9w99yThat's how I got started planning mine. The tips from popular mechanics seem fairly straightforward and easy. Most DIY articles show a square pergola but mine is going to be 8'x16' or so (rectangular) depending on the longest lengths of 2x10 or 2x12 Cedar planks we can buy locally, so I'll be customizing any plan/instructions I find helpful.I originally got the idea from a magazine at the customer service center at my local Lowes Home Improvement Warehouse and I wish I could remember which one (mag) ! Guess I should've bought it then...

Try using your inside voice ;-)
WHAT INSIDE VOICE?
see at which hours you want max shadow and how much max is for you (can be between half - full for example)
see the sun angle at this hour
design the supports. build strong supports with account to wear and tear by weather and wind force on the pergola
you may want to plant trees next to it that will grow and eventually replace the pergola. then it can be removed
you may want to copy an existing pergola if unsure when designing
