Help with 33cc Gas Scooter? Answered

Picture of

I have a 33cc gas scooter (sounds nerdy, I know), on the side I can make out what looks like Moto Rebel but not sure. It was used twice, sat in garage for one year without gas in the tank, then sold to me for $20 (Amazing price for something that's $350 new). Like new! It is 2-stroke but am unsure of the model number. It starts runs on choke between a small margin but won't run on ON, which is above choke on the switch. I think it may need the idle screws adjusted but am unsure. Has new and correct gas oil mix in tank and has primer button. Help would be appreciated.

Have you let it idle a while and warm up before taking the choke off? What does the exhaust look like when you can get it to run? You should be able to extract the spark plug fairly easily - what does that look like? L

I tried that today. I blocked it up started it and tryed to let it idle but would always start to die so I had to give it more gas. I ran it at just above idle, medium, and full tilt and tried putting it in ON in each position but it died in all three. The exhaust on start up sends a little smoke but running its exactly as should be (my friend has the exact same one). It does have correct fuel/oil mixture so that shouldn't be the problem. I will extract the spark plug when I get some free time as more then one comment has asked about it.

Could be a fuel / air problem. Taking the air filter off and cleaning it should be an easy one to try. You can dismantle the carb' and clean that too, but it's a longer more awkward job. L

I know it isn't getting gas now because I rode it for an hour and a half on choke and never once flooded the engine. I will try the air filter and cleaning the carb and was going try tuning idle and high speed screws. But if all else fails I will take it to a lawnmower repair shop. I got it for $20 and am willing to spend $50 on it if needed, but I think it should be alright before that happens.

Try the air filter (easy), as for the carb' sometimes this makes a lot of difference, sometimes it doesn't. But if you take it off you'll be able to check for gunk and the condition of the reed. L

You were the only one I think that asked about the air filter and it was when I checked it that I noticed that on was off and off was on. So technically it wasn't what you suggested to do that fixed the problem but i did get me to finding the problem. But to everyone thanks for the ideas so if anything does go wrong I have ideas to start with and thanks for getting the $20 scooter running! I'm very happy!

SINCE I HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM AND SOLVED IT IT IS HARD TO PICK A "BEST ANSWER". FIRST IT DID HAVE EXCELLENT SPARK. HOWEVER THE MAIN PROBLEM WAS WITH A STICKER, YES A STICKER. IT WAS LABELED WRONG SO ON IS OFF AND OFF IS ON BUT CHOKE STAYS IN THE SAME POSITION. THE BEST ANSWER GOES TO WHOEVER ASKED ABOUT THE AIR FILTER FIRST BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED IT. BUT THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP!

If it set for a year even with out gas in it the lines or carb may be partially clogged with gas gunk. Modern gas is really bad about gunking up things over time. If you can get it started try just keeping it running for a few min's. Sometimes that clears it up. You might have to take it into the lawnmower shop for a tune up.

Ran it today blocked up for about 10 mins. but still doesn't seem to want to as good as it should. Also I know its not the fuel line for sure because they are clear and I can see that they are good and free of gunk.

THe gunk get in the carb. in the tiny passages. You can't see in there and what you describe sounds exactly like a slightly plugged carb. passage to me. My tiller motor had this and I had to rebuild the carb. to get it to run off choke. My lines looked clean also.

Whats it do when you attempt to start it? Cause if choke works it might be just the carb as it isnt mixing the fuel correctly. Cant say for sure without what it does when its on choke and when its on ON.

You have to mix the fuel/oil mixture, the engine doesn't do it. It has the correct mixture in the tank right now. When started it always does something on the fourth try. It will either ignite and die and stop or it will start I grab the throttle and get it going to a point where it won't stall. Also it can only be in ON or choke not both so once flipped out of choke into ON it dies. I have tried flipping to ON from just above idling, medium and full tilt and it immediately dies after hitting the switch.

start it with a lil bit of throttle and leave it idling before taking the choke off If you take the sparkplug out with a sparkplug rachet be sure to use a wire brush To clean the sparking points

I blocked it up today and ran it but when I tried idling it it would start to die. I will try the spark plug idea later when I have some free time.
