Homemade LCD? Answered

I have been wondering this for some time now: How can I make my own lcd solution? I don't want anything that will be able to display a picture, what I'd like to do is make windows that can shade/unshade. It'd be only one pixel, so no fancy circuitry would be required.

At the risk of necro'ing an old thread, so far the only DIY-friendly way of making transparent conductors I've found is the SnO2 coating on glass method:
...in conjunction with a homemade microkiln (basically a hollowed out firebrick and a propane tank), this might be a doable weekend project?

...I wonder if really tiny iron slivers in a gel would work as an alternative to liquid crystal in this case?

If anyone's figured out how to DIY liquid crystal I'd love to hear about it! All the documented ways I've found so far require patented & hard to get precursors

You could use LCD smartie to control a HD44780 LCD driver IC and use the windows as pixels.

I am not sure what a 'LCD smartie' is. In any case, I am hoping actually make my own LCD, not control one I already have.

LCD Smartie is a free opwn source LCD program used to control LCDs from a computer. I mean hook up the windows to a HD44780 chip as the pixels.

Actually, he does not want to control a LC display : he would like to make some Liquid Crystals.

They say Liquid Crystals were invented after studying carrot's cholesterol ...
If it's possible to produce home-made LC, the most difficult to make (or to find) would be the large polarizing filters films ...

transparent electrodes....... what do i know thats conductive and transparent.... how many volts are we talking?

It wouldn't be very much, just spread out over a large area. It doesn't take much to make liquid crystals align to the path...but it has to be applied evenly over a large surface. transparency is key though, being a window....

You might try researching OLEDs for a clear electrode. They have to use them to.

i have an idea, but we need to pump Thousands of volts to make it work.

What about clear mylar sheets rubbed down with graphite, it works for electrostatic speakers and they are very see threw

mylar is a capacitor. the output would be erratic.

Technically and electrically speaking Mylar is a dielectric - the insulator between the conducting plates of a capacitor.

For the effect of a tint-able window, no polarizing film is needed at all. The liquid crystals, when randomized, block the light and when energized they align and let light through.

Somebody ever figures this out let us all in on it. I saw some science TV show years ago where they made their own LCD panels, I believe by just sandwiching the solution between glass microscope slides. Would love to make my own custom auto darkening welding helmet if I could just get my hands on the LCD solution.

companies that make microchips use liquid crystal to test the chips. if it shorts then it heats up causing the liquid crystal to blacken. i cant figure out where to get any liquid crystal.

what a coincidence, I've had the same idea for a while now, and I decided to google how to make my own LCD at home and this very post was the first relevant result to show up

I emailed Tim Hunkin about it, here's his reply (with permission): "I remember deciding it was too hard to 'cook the chemicals up' from household chemicals. I got my liquid crystal from what used to be the government Royal Signals Research Unit at Malvern. They'd made a lot of money patenting some key chemical used in supertwist displays. That was now 22 years ago! Its all since been privatised, they are part of Quinetiq, and I know everything has changed there. I would have thought their must still be companies that make custom LCD displays in the UK for medical and military apps. also might be worth contacting Pilkington's or SanGobin, because I think they use the chemicals in the fancy glass screens that go opaque at a touch of a button." "... when I was making the films I never had long to get things to work so I always took the easiest solution! With the liquid crystals, Malvern were very enthusiastic and keen to help."

yaxu, Thanks! That is a great demo, and something I'd like to recreate.

Also look at welding shields, they have several auto darking shades which are LCD based...

Just 'cause somebody has to be the spoilsport...

It would of course be far easier to rig up a little electrical motor to some blinds, to achieve the effect you're after. Add in a little solar cell and a battery, so the blinds can run autonomously...

Trying to make your own LC panle would be far more educational though - I'd suggest you try something microscope slide sized first, before you even *consider* window panes...

I am not even necessarily interested in making the LC solution myself...I'd be satisfied with purchasing it and sandwiching it between glass and some conductive layers. :-)

For transparent conductive layers, I think vapours of tin could do that (however, it's very toxic to breath).
