I want to DIY to turn a standard ghard drive tooken from a computer and make it where it can connect to a computer from a USB like a flash drive does. It's a 5v 700mA DC also 160GB. This is how it looks like on inside http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-HTS542516K9SA00-160GB-Hard-Drive/dp/B001677GUI

USB can provide 5v and 500mA (or as low as 100mA in some situations) so you will need an external power source. This could be a transformer (wall wart) from something else that provides 5V and >700mA.
Then you can buy SATA-to-USB patch cables or SATA-to-USB external enclosures.

If you want to patch the cables yourself you may have to experiment. If you look at the SATA pinout there are 4 data lines (transmit +/- and receive +/-) while USB only has 2.

You can just buy an enclosure, put the HDD in it and you are good to go.

Make sure you get an enclosure that has the interface you need (ide vs SATA) and fits the size of your HDD (yours is 3.5in, laptop drives are 2.5in)

Here is a link to some HDD enclosures.
