How do I build a computer desktop tower carrying case? Answered

I'm looking to build a computer desktop tower carrying case. I'm in a situation where I need to move from house to house each week and I need to move my desktop tower as well. I've looked all over the internet to try to find a "case" for my case, but I can't find one for a reasonable price. (ie. $100+) Basically what I'm looking for is a basic box with some straps and padding that I can set my case into and not have to worry about it getting banged up while I transport it. Any ideas or help for building something like this would be greatly appreciated

The size of my tower is listed below if that will help.
18.30" x 8.10" x 18.00"

I have a set of antec straps that came with an ancient case -- clips on in 2 places like a seat belt (2 loops around the case) then those 2 loops are connected at the top of the case by a handle, so the case can be carried in one hand. Much easier than reboxing the case into ANOTHER box. I take it you don't have the shipping box your original case came with?

such as...http://www.geargrip.com/

Those are a bit expensive for what you get-- hit up a hardware store and get the strap material, clips, and sew your own.

+1 on the straps.
I have several sets of them. They make moving a case much easier and secure with a nice big handle on top.
However the straps do not keep the case from getting dinged. I usually hang onto a few boxes so if I have to move a case that needs protection I can usually find one that fits. You can put the straps around the entire box if they are long enough and that gives you a handle. Another alternative is to put the strap on then wrap a big towel around the case, something like a beach towel and run a length of box tape around it to hold it in place.
A bigger problem is the flat screen monitor as those can get damaged really easily. You can cut a large piece of cardboard to fit across the screen and tape it in place.

I used to fit my flatscreen flat against the side of the tower under the strap, with some rubbery padding between them (the stuff you line shelves with to stop the dishes rattling). Only had to pull the base foot off the bottom so it would lay flush. I like these newer ones with kb/mouse pockets.

On the odd times I've had to move my PC, all I've done is carry it in my hands to the car, then strap it to a seat with the belt. Worked fine.

If your case is a sturdy one and the top of the case is just a flat landscape, I would look for the biggest handle I could find and mount directly to the top of the case. This way you can carry it around like a piece of Samsonite Luggage

Good Luck
