How do I plan my wedding? Answered

In January of this year on our anniversary my better half proposed to me. :) I am more excited and happy than I have ever been thinking of being married to Thomas, but there's one aspect that I dread- the actual wedding. I have absolutely no idea what to do. I'm apparently the only girl in the history of girls who hasn't spent a single day of her life imagining her "big day". I don't even know what I want my dress to look like!

I have approximately a year and a half before the day comes- we haven't actually set a date but we decided on a two year engagement to have time to take some premarital classes through my church and let Thomas get a foundation in his new job.

All that is set down right now:
1)The wedding will most likely happen at our church
2) We want a small wedding and large reception- Thomas' family is HUGE and the church is pretty tiny so this way everyone gets to be a part of it without being crushed
3) One of our mutual friends is going to make the cake (which I'm super excited about)
4) There is a LOT more I have to get started planning and I don't even know where to begin!

So please send me your suggestions and any tips, projects or other sites that might help- I really have no clue what all goes into weddings so pretty much anything you could dream up would probably benefit me enormously.
Thank you all so much! God Bless!

Wedding Planner.  I can't tell you how invaluable it will be to get a planner and save yourself money, aggravation, stress, etc.  They can hunt down vendors.  They can get you prices.  They can help you think about flow and cohesion.  They can call the vendors 24 hours before they are due to arrive.  They can ensure all the vendors get paid.  It's a lot of stuff you won't want to deal with and will doubtfully want to hand off to a relative or friend who'd rather be enjoying the event.  I got married last year and had a planner.  I did a few DIY type projects for the event, and I had family and friends help.

Plated meals cost about the same as buffet because with plated you buy less food.  Buffets inevitably turn into a bum rush for the food which becomes a nightmare if you have more than 50 guests.  Plus I've seen some nasty stuff happen at buffets where obviously people weren't taught to use serving utensils...

And don't forget that it's 1 day in your whole life.  Forever and ever and ever with him and never ever seeing anyone else and hoping like hell that you grow in a similar path.  As part of wedding planning due to its relationship to marriage, it's best to talk to a marriage counselor and iron out all the nitty gritty details of marriage such as who will control the savings, who will mail off the checks for utilities, how many children you'll have if any, what happens if you're infertile, what happens if you disagree with his mom, how will household tasks be broken up, views on punishing children, etc.  Most marriages dissolve due to financial issues and/or infidelity.  It's important that you two are committed to the basic fundamental inner workings of the marriage because love is roughly 5% of most marriages - for the vast majority of couples, romantic/passionate love lasts 2 years.  The rest is how well you can work together and how much time you can spend together without getting bored or irritated.

Planning our wedding was easy!

My future father-in-law hands his cheque book to my future mother-in-law, and I spent the whole time a minimum of 200 miles away.
