How should i clean painted brushed steel? Answered

I'm currently working on the restoring of a Philips 748 from 1979 and i want to clean its  frontal plate, which is brushed steel with what looks like electro painting. What can i use that wont ruin the paintjob?

Add 3 or 4 drops of liquid dish detergent to 1/4 cup (2 ounces) of rubbing alcohol. The detergent makes all the difference in its ability to clean. Just wipe it dry, there isn't enough soap in the alcohol to require rinsing.

Sounds good. I`ll try it. I kind of solved the problem with fine polishing compound and a flannel, but it was smudging around the silked words and marks on the plate, halfway removing them. As your solution is less agressive, it may give better results.

Try mineral spirits. Metal bottles of it are sold in most marine stores.

I am partial to rubbing alcohol for my brushed aluminum stuff. it is a fairly decent organic solvent and tend to not ruin electronics. the higher the percentage of alcohol the better. you can get 90% from walmart. use it with a cloth so you can do some scrubbing without damaging the finish. it works for me at leat

i`m using rubbing alcohol at 98% but its not working as much as i want. Looks like the last 30 years dust is really stuck to it and i`m afraid of using something like a polishing compound, as i can ruin the painting. Or the polishing is a good idea?
