How to convert an ordinary door into a sliding door? Answered

In this winterbreak I plan to reorganize my room because I'm bored of the old setup.Just wanted to know how can I convert an ordinary (hinged) door to a sliding one.I want to keep the original door because if I change it I will mess up the look of the house.I have a concept which involves some railings but I dont know how to pull out of the socket the side with the hinges. The rest of the build will be easy. That is the only problem I can't seem to be able to wrap my head around.Any suggestions will be good.Thx alot

My '75 Chevy van that I had a long time ago popped the left hand side of the door out so it would slide back to the left.

What you need is a rod and bellcrank that pushes a padded pin thru the door so that it pops the back side of the door out of the jamb so that the door will slide back over the wall. That all could be connected to a modified door knob.

Hmmm..I can try connecting some sort of cable from the door knob mechanism to a piston of some kind.Thx for the idea ;)

Just go to any hardware store and ask for either "sliding door hardware" or "by-pass door hardware." There is quite a variety in styles and quality to choose from that will do the job. You will need to install a rail at header height on the wall for the hardware to mount to but it is a relatively simple job.
I've done it numerous times for some of my clients.

rickharris explains perfectly how to build the sistem of sliding doors.and the design of the cabinet is up to your and/or your clients.you shouldn't sign contracts that you can't fullfill ;)

Remove door by unscrewing hinges and remove them.

Set door on small wheels at the bottom and arrange a track for them to run on.

Put a "pelmet" at the top of the door to guide it and prevent the door falling in or out.

the pictures are our wardrobe but it works the same way.

Re-design understood what i want to build.I'm familliar with the sliding design on your wardrobe but that isn't what i need.My door needs to slide sideways first and then straight. As soon as i recover my DSLR i will make some pictures to my door and explain better what i want.Thx for the help.I'm going to use this rail sistem on the couch I'm building.

The magic words are "pocket door" - there are loads of hardware solutions, and simple design implementations. Take a look at Google - or Fine Homebuilding magazine for ideas.

If I'm not mistaken "pocket door" are those that slide INTO the wall.I need mine to slide along the wall.I'll try to upload a picture tomorrow so I can explain better what I want.
