How to make a 3D print file from a paper working drawing. Answered

Dear Forum,

I am wanting to make a print of a model steam locomotive wheel that I can use as a pattern for making sand castings for iron.

I have no experience at all of 3D printing but I do understand that it can be used very successfully for this type of process.

I need the attached drawings made into a print to enable me to pattern this is sand casting iron. Where do I start as I have no idea of the software required.

Thankyou all for your help in advance.

I don't see the attachment. If you put them up, I can make you a CAD file easily.

You could try to search thingiverse.com and other sites for a locomotive wheel .stl file to see if someone already created a suitable model to work off of. You can modify/resize the model in Tinkercad - a free online modeling software to use. You can then send the model to any of the many 3D print services to get made. Good luck.

Your going to need a 3D CAD drawing nso you can produce an STL file can be output for the 3 D printer.
Assuming your not going to buy a printer for one job, you should look at your selected print shop for information as to what files format they can handle.
Sketchup is a free CAD programs that can output STL files. (steep learning curve if your not a CAD user.)

For something as simple as a wheel you could make a pattern from wood or even stacked card.
