I am CRUSHED.... :-( Answered

Picture of

I had finally gotten my "project" (for the gift exchange) finished, well except for some cosmetic touches to make it look nicer then it did.

I tested it for the last time, and a wire crossed and the speaker when POOF in a puff of smoke.

This thing has me so depressed at not being able to finish it and get it sent that I am having troubles just getting back in and tearing it all out to replace the speaker and maybe put in a dampener resister to prevent it from happening again......I AM going to finish this one way or another......just wanted you all to know I am having to deal with a lot lately (my Mom becoming ill and maybe needing full time "residence in a facility" and being the only one left in the family willing to do anything, a whole lot has been dumped into my lap since July.

But I DO intend on getting this out somehow, but Tuesday...but I am so sorry for this horribly long delay.

I'm sorry about the speakers and your mom needing extra care. My dad is in a nursing home due to Parkinson's, and my father-in-law has Parkinson's and will likely need the same care soon. My husband is 29, and I'm 28. It's crap all the way around. I hope you find a suitable solution soon! Take care and good luck!

It's really devastating to my Mom, because she just walked everywhere while I and my brothers and sister grew up. We lived out in the country so everything was miles away. Now she can hardly get upstairs.

Right now, I am suffering from information overload....too many places, too many things to consider......I have to get it all organized so I can see it all in "one place"

The speaker thing was a mistake, that caused it to either be over driven, or sent a 9 vdc 25 mA surge through it, and smoked it......I mean, it literally gave off smoke....

Well, let us know if you need any help getting it working. Send a PM or something and I'd be happy to look over your schematics to see if I can spot anything wrong. Though I guess you sorta know what's wrong, you just need to fix it! Toss a 10uF electrolytic in series with the speaker and it should be happy. :)

The initial design is not flawed, it is the trouble I had in incorporating it into the lid of a box.....well, I can't give too much away, but it has just been one mishap after another with this thing.....a string of bad luck and some interferance being thrown in from the sidelines at home did not help any either.

well, it is mostly frustration and depression making matters bad now.

Thanks, there are definitely a lot of externals (distractions, but necessary things) going on right now.

Jeff-o...don't forget that a coupling cap for a speaker load forms an RC filter, with the speaker being the "R" part. A 10uF cap with an 8 ohm speaker has a cutoff frequency of about 2 kHz.

That's why the output caps for LM386 circuits are usually around 220uF with a speaker load (about 90 Hz cutoff for 8 ohm). Higher impedance loads would be happy with much smaller caps...

Sure, 220uF it is, then! I suppose it all depends on what kind of beeps and boops Goodhart's mystery box is producing.

Kiteman, I am much too numerate  to ever gamble, at a casino or a lottery :-)

Oooo it has speakers? I'm excited, I haven't a clue what it is! Well.... I have a little clue, I know it's a box that makes noise and has pyrography on it. :D

But seriously, don't stress yourself over it, I really don't mind how long it takes.

I took the liberty of altering the keywords to something more positive. Smile!

Well, what you see there is the box before I "fixed" it, and I didn't show the pyrography yet, so don't get too excited.....and, well, I will replace the speaker and put in a dampener cap to eliminate the obvious 9 v dc that is somehow getting through to it.....btw, it only had one small speaker,  it was something that I built once before (not in a wooden box though) and it took me an evening (sigh -  just ONE evening).   One other hint, though it won't give it away,  it is "supposed" to be a tester of some sort.....*sigh* it even gave me a nasty BURN tonight before I set it down to think about it some more.....it is totally freaking me out.....this should be SIMPLE......am I going senile?   I know my eyesight hinders me a lot, but good grief !

Besides that, I do want to get it finished so I can send it and enter some of the contests coming up (and not feel guilty by putting yours off....which I wouldn't do).
