The globe will be painted by young children for a recylcing themed parade float.
As steveastrouk says, size is important. Also durability. Is it going to have to stand up to kids climbing on it, or rain? One way to make a smaller (say 3-4 foot diameter) globe is to buy one of those really big novelty balloons, blow it up to the size you need and cover it with paper mache. Put it on in several layers letting it dry between, using very thin layers at first so the weight doesn't deform the balloon too much.If it needs to be bigger I'd build a pair of these geodesic domes (super detailed instructions at the link) and put them together to make a full sphere.
