Also keep in mind that if you live in a place with cold weather, the ice sheet that forms on the top of the lake is constantly shifting. This could cause your dock to buckle and break if the supports are too long/deep in the water.

Questions: Have you filed for a permit? How big a dock are you thinking of? Covered or uncovered. What material do you prefer? Have you ever built anything like this before? Are you planning on using piles, concrete or what method will you be supporting the dock. Do you have access to a barge heavy enough to support your machinery? Or are you planning to use a crane on the bank. If you'll answer these questions I would be happy to give you any of my experience that you need.
