Ibler ranks? (Idea for Instructables Update) Answered

So, one day I was thinking during school. And, I came up with an idea. What if you had a rank on how active you are in Instructables? Like for example, I came up with rankings from 1 to 3 which should be up to 10 1: Infant - 0 Instructables, 20 comments 2: Toddler - 1 Instructable, 70 comments 3: Pre - k - 1 - 3 Instructables, 120 comments etc. I was wondering, what do you think of this idea?

you see my projects are styled with the highest standards of steampunk design and deserve 5 stars. so i am 5 stars myself now look at anything else. howto move gas from 1 car to another with a pipe ? like what cant you damn ride to the gas station ? average instructable. 2.5 stars (could be 5 if you used brass pipe with barometer to be stylish). or the one with replacing the cpu fan ? damn its average too and also has a typo in step 2 so deserves only 2 and not 2.5. and thats exactly the rating 95 % of the members here deserve - including you and ash (aww i hate pokemon) and whatsisface who DARES to curse us as elitists you see the masses here just like steampunk more than boring everyday junk that instructables is flooded with. and also i told my friends that rating all the knex guns 0.5 was worth it. see how right i am ? now that the members themselfes have the ratings average from their instructables we can clearly see who is really contributing to make instructables look special and great and not one of the many diy and knex sites all around the web and gmjhowe you say ? no his steampunk projects are good but sadly he wastes too much time and resources to other projects that are not cool in any way and do nothing except puling his member rating down

Tell that to the following massive blogs.

Lifehacker
io9 Once, and Twice

You will also find that i 'waste' most my time helping out on this website, helping people improve their Ibles, as well as contributing via forum posts.

Btw, i recently sold one of my 'wastes' of time, for about 112 USD.
I suggest you do not waste your time replying to this comment, and take the time to respect other people.

Continuing to feign ignorance fools no one. You were plainly angry at gmjhowe, as any objective reader can discern, and to continue to deny it and whine that everyone misinterpreted your words only makes you look silly.

Aha, the 'lets pretend i didn't mean what i said' card. There was no hints of a joke, or play in what you said. Its obvious you meant it as serious. If your gonna play, please play nice. Then maybe i would not have to prove you right, over and over again.

my projects are styled with the highest standards of steampunk design
is ANY of my projects steampunk ?

and deserve 5 stars. so i am 5 stars myself
check the facts

and also has a typo in step 2 so deserves only 2 and not 2.5
me with my amount of typos and misspellings to claim that ?

aww i hate pokemon
i thought this one shouts out loud

the masses here just like steampunk more than boring everyday junk that instructables is flooded with
check the facts

and also i told my friends that rating all the knex guns 0.5 was worth it. see how right i am ? now that the members themselfes have the ratings average from their instructables we can clearly see who is really contributing to make instructables look special and great and not one of the many diy and knex sites all around the web
this. entire. part.

and gmjhowe you say
look carefully who mentioned gmjhowe's name first

other projects that are not cool in any way
i am not a steampunker. i cannot claim that not steampunk = not cool

and do nothing except puling his member rating down
check the facts

its not the lets pretend card. you just took it as attack while it was presentation of a situation - maybe too artistic one. i did not mean or (intentionally) hint that its personal. and i did not bring you here in the first place

Yep, because people should always be ranked by what essentially amounts to either the chronological order they found instructables, or how much they like the sound of their own voice.

Thinking aloud:

If we must have a ranking system, then it ought to be one awarded by other members, anonymously, based on the quality of an individual's input to the community.

Maybe the "stars" ranking awarded to projects and topics could be added to an individual's member page?

But then, how would we get around the "you rate me and I'll rate you" tactic?

If a tiny amount of inconvenience is inserted - maybe members have to fill in a small form with a reason why?

Or maybe we each just let our actions speak for us, and we drop the whole ranking idea altogether?

Yeh...

Yes. If you can't see something good when you're looking at it, a rating isn't going to help in real terms. People like ratings because they remove the need to assess things for themselves. "What does everyone else think? Right I'll go with that" L

What about having a poll on each member's profile, so each time a member helps with something, you can click a '+1' or something, but it would be kept anonymous..
You can't '+1' yourself either. :D

I can see a need for tangible praise in some people. I have pupils who work like stink at the prospect of getting a sticker at the end of it. I suppose you could add a whole extra set of search filters, so that visitors (who don't know any of the members' reputations) could search for a keyword ranked by, er, rank. I'm not sure it would be useful for day-to-day users, though.

Oh aye, but we've got best answer, patches, winner, finalist, featured, rating etc. I don't see the value in shifting what's on a person's contribution to the person. If as a teacher you're marking someone's work you put the mark on the work, not on them? The praise is transferred from the work by the creator isn't it? (Stickers are symbolic, so yes I see that - but the site does issue patches already)

I wasn't arguing for the rankings, just exploring how they could be of benefit if they were implemented.

You're right about the marking, but at the same time knowledge of a pupil's previous work gives me a guide to the level of future pieces of work; I could sort through a pile of projects, sorting them by my knowledge of past work, reasonably confident that the work on top of the pile will be better than work at the bottom of the pile, even before I open it. That way, a trainee teacher, who does not know the class, would be given an idea of what to expect regarding quality.

Yes I see it (and I didn't think that you were arguing for rankings). In your working environment people do matter more, because they learn and develop, and you interact with them personally. Here, it's the black and white (or 24-bit colour) content that make a person - who's behind it matters little. L
