Instructables Answers Answered

Check out our new Instructables Answers!

Have questions about how to build or make something, where to get tools or materials, or about DIY and life in general? Me too. To get answers to all of our questions, we've put together an answers section on Instructables. Ask a question, and help answer questions from the community. Then, choose the best answer to help others with the same question.

You can ask a question from almost any page on the site. Look for the blue answers box, and type in your question -- you don't even need to create an account or log in. Upload images to help explain your question.

Answers is a work in progress, and while we have many of the key elements ready for you to test, there are a few obvious things we're not quite finished building, but will be up as soon as possible. Upcoming features include:
  • Your questions on your "You" page
  • Indication of the number of answers and Best Answers for users replying to your questions
  • More tips for asking good questions
  • Ability for the community to vote on a Best Answer to a question

Let us know how you like it, and how it's working. If you come across a bug, please submit as much information as you can to our bugs forum section.

Update: Here are some tricks to see the Questions with the most Answers, and the most recent Answers: Instructables Answers Tricks - Sort by number of answers and most recent answers.

Eric, do you really like orange that much? I mean, when I wake up in the morning, and I get on Instructables, it really is a hurt on the eyes to see such a bright colour. Could you make an instructable page that would be like, the Answers Blue? Perhaps https://www.instructables.com/blue or https://www.instructables.com/green or even https://www.instructables.com/silver?

But...but it's not green, it's white :-)

Just wait. There are other people with the same anti-orange preference :-) Or, you could take the initiative and try writing a CSS yourself.

Hi, Adrian :-) I'bles publication interface is highly irritating. The link you captured above (as well as in your reply to RomanArtifact) is actually to the "Send GMail to all your soon-to-be former friends" page :-) The actual I'ble is https://www.instructables.com/community/Change_instructables_from_orange/

How can you find your question?

See my posting below from "Jan 28, 2009. 10:56 PM". The I'bles search interface isn't updated yet, but you can hand-edit the search URL.

You've never hand-edited a URL before? In your browser, the URL appears in the long "address" text box up at the top. Just click in there to get a cursor, and use your keyboard to make the appropriate modifications.

Also, soon your own questions will appear in your "You" page.

And there they are! Very nice, Eric (and Rachel et al. :-). Is there a reason why you've decided to put Best Answers and Your Questions widely separated on the You page? Just curious...

The You page badly needs a redesign.

Ericn is already working on it, but I'll point him to your suggestion.

I think you should have a page of just the questions. Like, no pictures as similar in Instructables, but just a very long list, maybe 25-50 per page. Like so.. How do i turn on my computer? How do you get the instructable website? Who is ewilhelm? Is it possible to jump onto a water bottle? Etc, etc.

Oh, never noticed that. You should have a more acessible link, like on the home page.

The word "ANSWERS" is the link. Try it, you might like it. And if you try things before asking, you might make faster progess!

The blue answers box, which is on most pages, has a link.

How about an RSS feed, or a email whenever somone makes a question in a specific category?Like, I would like to know when someone makes a question with the tech category. Then, I would get an email notification.

On the list. Not certain when we'll have it done, though.

Could a minimum word limit (such as 50) be put in, So people actually have some information to help answer it. As the word "null" doesn't help!

Coming soon. We've also got some hints and helpful pointers that will be integrated into the question form. Hopefully these will encourage people to include more information.

I have a question about answers... According to my profile, I have "best answered" 4 times. I have no idea which questions they are. Is it possible to arrange a notification, similar to the feature notice?

Are there any procedures in place for anyone abusing this great new feature? E.g. Flagging of questions?

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

user
ewilhelm (author)gmjhowe2009-01-28

Flagging is in place for answers. However, since I expect answers to move a little faster than Instructables and forum topics, we're going to need some help moderating, and have few things in store to make that happen.

I'd Gladly help!

On a suggestion note, I see to the left of the questions on the https://www.instructables.com/tag/type:question/ page, most of the questions have no picture and thus it's just a blank page. Perhaps put the Gray "Hand" logo there, like you have in the forums if a topic has no image.

And maybe even put a banner over the image for "Answered" like you did for Instructables that are "Finalists" or "Winners".

Something along the lines of the 'regular user' flag idea, Where by if say one of the feature team flags it, it is temp taken off until reviewed by yourselves, also, many of the regular ible contributers/forum users, could have said power, but the item is only removed when 3 of those users flag it. Great things as always! was rachel really up till 8am GMT? or is that another bug.

Is it possible for Guests to edit their questions? There have been a few Guests who have had poor grammar and comprehending the questions was very hard. I was going to tell them to edit their post but I wasn't sure if Guests were able to do that or not.

Very cool idea. I find myself on yahoo answers now and then answering anything I can. Obviously it's a new thing but the questions should be grouped into some sort of categories. Maybe for "stupid questions" (yeah yeah the only stupid question is one that isn't asked) you can have something like the "flag" and if it gets clicked three times it gets move over into the "silly question category"?? there is a couple more ideas to throw into the pot.
