Instructables Stats 2008 Answered

This week we looked at thetop 50 Commenters of 2008 and thetop 50 Instructables of 2008. Today we're going to be looking at what times Instructables are published.

To break this down, we're looking at the data in three different ways. The first shows, on average, how many Instructables are published for each day of the week in 2008. The second shows the totals for each month of 2008. Finally, we break it down for each of the 52 weeks (minus the last 2 days) of 2008.

Check it out.

Would it be within the limits of feasibility to do a graph on who has the most orangeboard comments?

Plz?

Hey, Ed. Could you annotate the time histories (especially the weekly plot) with the contest dates? I could probably collect the information myself by hand, but having arrows (or range-bars) on the plot would make the data self-describing.

It's not real pretty, but I added markers to the monthly graph to show when a contest was starting and ending. For some reason it will not upload as a photo but you can download the file. :-\

Your file name is wrong. There's no period between the name and "gif"

Maybe more like lines that go from start to stop of a contest, on the weekly one.

A horizontal bar graph in other words?

More like a horizontal timeline...

Yes...that's what I meant by "range bar" in my original comment (at the top of this subthread). |---------| However, as Fungus Amungus has pointed out, it's a lot of work (*) and he has other issues to resolve.

(*) It's a lot of work because you have to manually go to each contest announcement to pull the date information, then annotate it onto the histogram. Adrian went to a substantial effort for the very nice plot she made (above).

Weird. For reasons I don't understand, my Mac thinks that was an MPEG movie. That's very interesting! You can clearly see the correlations throughout the year.

:D My guess is that it has generic files assigned to whatever movie player you have. Yes. For instance, if I recall correctly, May, the month with the lowest ibles, has no contest activity at all, while December is one of the peak months and one of the ones with the most contests starting and ending.

Yeah problem. If only you had remembers the "dot" between "y" and "g", none of this would have happened :->

:-P Hey, it actually worked fine for me, I was just surprised that my Mac "decided" (for reasons that are clearly inexplicable) that your obvious graphic file was actually an MPEG movie :-) When I tried to play it, it was .... reallly .... slow ... motion ....

actually, you're wrong. as the graph shows there were two contest that went through may, one that started in march and one that started in april. both went right through may and so they where not labeled on the graph.

Lithium Rain (author)dsman1952762009-01-09

Ah, but no contests started or ended in may.

i know, i never said you were wrong with your graph, but the reason may did not have many instructables was because of something other then contests.

Don't forget January had no contest either from the chart.

kelseymh (author)FaqMan2009-01-08

Yeah, but the chart doesn't have data from 2007 (we could find the 2007 version of the posting), so you can't draw any conclusions about January from the information given.
