Is AC or DC used inside disposable camera capacitor chargers? Answered

Was wondering if AC or DC is used inside disposable camera capacitor chargers. The input is 1.5v DC and AC is needed to power a transformer. What is used to charge the capacitor? Does the circuit convert DC to AC? If so, what kind of frequency is it?

It's pulsed or variable voltage. It doesn't flip from + to - like AC as you'd normally think of it, but it's not straight smooth continuous DC either.
This page explains essentially the same DC-DC process, with nice pictures.

The answer is "yes". It's essentially a DC-to-DC converter -- DC from the battery runs an oscillator to produce a signal which can be put through a transformer to step up its voltage, and that boosted voltage is converted back from AC to DC. That's part of why you hear a whistling sound as it charges up.
