Is this a copy right problem? Using google images. Answered

Instructables seems strict about authors using their own images.  If I want to use a cartoon figure of Garfield, for example, embedded into other art work I'm doing, would that be allowed?  The Garfield image would just be something I would google image, but it won't be standing alone - it would be incorporated into some other diagrams I'm making.

Just wondering if that's allowed or if I should just stay away from it totally.

Using a copyrighted image to create another image is fine. For instance, a photo of a coke bottle uses the copyrighted shape of the bottle to create an image.

Copying the image and presenting it as your own (or at least not crediting the source) is not fine.

Most creators of images like that do not object to re-use of the image as part of another creation, as long as the re-use does not in any way denigrate the original.

There are quite a few 'ibles (even ones that win contests) that use images from Google, I don't know if they asked for permission but I would say that is the best approach.

The worst thing you can get from asking is a "NO".

If you aren't afraid of NO then go ahead and ask!

Pictures, as well as text is always a problem in terms of copyright.

For many things on a non commercial base the copyright holder has little problem to agree for his content to be used.

Some want a defined statement under the content, other are fine just to know about it and say ok.

Of course you always have cases where the material simply won't get permission, never hurts to ask if you really want to include something that is not yours.

Google Images doesn't confer or remove any copyrights. It merely finds and presents images from other sources. It is your responsibility to check the _original_ source and determine whether the image is copyrighted or not, and to secure necessary usage permission from that original source.
