Knexpert Answered

I think that the term Knexpert is too widely used. I think it should be for several (over 3) innovative builds (NOT for instance an old system with one or two pieces changed) or some very good replicas. Am I alone in this thinking? Discuss. And p.s. Am I the oldest active member on here now that hasn't moved mainly to KI? I don't mean oldest in age, but oldest in time on instructables. I think a few may still be here. I'm not sure.

I have made literally hundreds of knex weapons, mostly from instructions on here or KI but around 25 of my own builds. If you click my name you can see my instructables, but I post hardly anything, I'm lazy like that.

I've been using 'ibles since 2006, since I've had no need for an account. But then it became biased towards members and the fact that it seemed that I was the only person apart from Mepain and KillerK who had managed to make the SRv2, so I joined in february 2009! I think I did quite well, since already I'm on 1200 comments and 43 subbers! :)

Loads of people made the SRV2.  It's one of the easier 'hard' guns on the site.

They did? I only ever saw KillerK's (obv) and Mepains mini version. Apart from perhaps a couple of others I thought that everyone else only made it from my guide

i don't know when i joined, but i think it was sortof close (by sort of, i mean still awhile ago, but not as far ago as you.) i think that people moving on to KI is just dumb. i know it's a good site and all, but now, there are barely any knex guns popping up. i agree with TheDunkis, when not many knex guns are being made, then the Knexpert standard gets lowered. i don't know what happened to the knex society on 'ibles. PS: i've noticed that KI doesn't really have new guns posted all that much. is it easier to post there, or do people just think that 'ibles too "lame"?

Yeah it's mainly because the KIers left and made it too easy to become a knexpert. If you leave knexperts in charge of choosing ohter knexperts then we'll get no where because most of them take the position lightly. I miss when the knelders ran the joint because it was a lot harder to impress them so much that they considered you one of them.

Yep. I say that we should be harsher about guns here, I saw a gun the other day that was a barrel and stick block trigger but, and I quote, "In a nice frame" This should not get comments from people praising it because that have not had enough time to realise that it was rubbish. Not naming names, but a few people have come along and, not by making bad guns but by putting good comments on bad guns, lowered the standards. I used to be really harsh about bad guns, but if I see 4 good comments I am compelled to go with the crowd. I am happy to announce this will no longer happen.

Lol yeah I remember when people were harsh to me about being harsh to others thinking my guns were all that. They were no better but I knew that theirs didn't deserve such high praise. I also try to be nice when leaving comments but from this day I'm not going so light if a gun sucks...well then it sucks.

I know, people have to understand that by telling someone else that their gun is bad doesn't mean that you are saying that your own guns are any better.

You do realize that most K'nexers on this website are under 13 years old, right?

Yeah you're worse...you're of an age that typically 99% of you are immature and are the biggest contributers to unoriginal guns. Not saying that you are but...that's how it typically goes.

ur right. i think u have to have a certain intellectual capacity to construct well produced weapons that adolescence of an age lower than 13 can't seem to produce and comprehend. (let's see those kids try to figure out what that means.)

So basicly what you're saying is that the standard has gone down, because the best are not as good as they used to be?

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

user
TheDunkis (author)Dutchj2008-11-26

Exactly! The people who are left slowly moved the standards down. Some of the knexperts are way too easily impressed and make it easy for others to come in thus lowering the standards even further. Now as long as you have a couple of guns that don't completely suck you can be a knexpert. It doesn't feel like an accomplishment because at least over half the knexers are knexperts. We should make another level to reach like knex master for the truly good people so I have something look forward to. haha kneteran= knex + veteran. Yeah there we go. We should also make a mid level for people like DJ who keep complaining. knegulars? Regular knexers.
Alright so it would be like this
knewb-new to knex and just starting out
knegular- been here for awhile and has some decent guns but not a step above average.
kneterans-The new knexperts or otherwise what used to be the lower ranked knexperts would now be this.
knexpert- We would hopefully revive this term to it's original meaning. It will mean you truly are an expert in knex.
Master- self explanatory
Lol sorry for the wall o' text but do you think that'll work? Maybe I should make a thread for that and we could fix up the community a bit.

I know this is kinda late, but have you talked to other people besides this. I really like the categories. I was also surprised with the amount of "knexperts" that were just suddenly added. You can easily tell that some of the "knexperts" are far better than other ones. You should go through with this idea, try talking to Viccie about his list.

user
TheDunkis (author)Mr. Stealth2009-02-16

Thanks but now I'm totally against the idea. The term knexpert has been tainted by everyone who thinks of it as nothing but a series of requirment that gains them automatic respect. I would like to point out the real knexperts compared to those who are just commonly accepted as good.

Mr. Stealth (author)TheDunkis2009-02-16

Who do you consider the real knexperts and how do you plan to distinguish them from the other ones?

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

user
TheDunkis (author)Mr. Stealth2009-02-16

Well it sort of depends. In my mind they're the people who managed to make a lot of well built projects like viccie and IaC. Let's just say I wouldn't consider myself a true knexpert. Yeah I'm good but I'm not a master at it. I think a knexpert should be someone that you can ask them to make something and they'll at least have an idea on how to make it. They wouldn't just build randomly but they would have plan on how to make something and at the same time they would experiment and know exactly how to improve it when they find out it's a good idea.

Select as Best AnswerUndo Best Answer

user
Mr. Stealth (author)TheDunkis2009-02-16

So what your saying is that a true knexpert knows how to build things, but also knows how each piece works and all their variables in them and is able to use them to the best of their ability. They constantly come up with new ideas that are innovative and still work.
