Is it possible to use a working monitor from a broken laptop as a display for a project?

It's been over a year since the last post, but I felt a need to add that you can indeed do it - you simply need a controller kit. Search on eBay for an LCD controller kit and you can find one for around $50 or so. They're frequently used in the DIY Cintiq community...

No. You need to have some sort of controller, which is usually built into the laptop's motherboard. While it is possible to build/buy your own controller for the LCD, it is generally cheaper to just buy a new LCD monitor.

Thanks for the info guys. I was really hoping to do something cool with the monitor, but it looks now like I'll sell it on ebay

It also seems the controller logic is not open source and is usually proprietary to the manufacturer as a trade secret or something.

They should really put this question as a sticky in the FAQs since is seems to keep popping up in Answers and burning questions all the time. Or just make a contest out of it.

Maybe flame-out questions. They sputter to a halt...
