"Malware Detected" Answered

Hi, today I got an error message in chrome whenever I load an instructables page;

"Google has found malicious software may be installed onto your computer if you proceed. If you've visited this site in the past or you trust this site, it's possible that it has just recently been compromised by a hacker. You should not proceed, and perhaps try again tomorrow or go somewhere else.
We have already notified www.instructables.com that we found malware on the site. For more about the problems found on www.instructables.com, visit the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic page."

on the diagnostic page, it says;

"What is the current listing status for www.instructables.com?
Site is listed as suspicious - visiting this web site may harm your computer.

What happened when Google visited this site?
Of the 18 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 0 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 2012-06-16, and suspicious content was never found on this site within the past 90 days.
This site was hosted on 8 network(s) including AS4436 (AS), AS22300 (WIKIA), AS3257 (TISCALI).

Has this site acted as an intermediary resulting in further distribution of malware?
Over the past 90 days, www.instructables.com/files/orig did not appear to function as an intermediary for the infection of any sites.

Has this site hosted malware?
No, this site has not hosted malicious software over the past 90 days.

How did this happen?
In some cases, third parties can add malicious code to legitimate sites, which would cause us to show the warning message."

It goes on to suggest using the Google Webmaster tools to request a review.

It seems odd that it's always been fine before, then for no apparent reason shows this?

Thanks for reporting this. Several other users have had the same problem. One of the development team are looking into it.

Yes. This is specific to Chrome. However, the Webmaster at Instructables needs to take a look and if the site is clean then report that to Google so they can be aware. I have seen this message come up on the www.twit.tv site and that did for a short time have some dodgy code. They are very tech savvy and strive to keep their site clean. This needs looking at though. Just ignoring it will turn people away.

Exactly! I've gotten this google chrome warning 3 times and stayed away from Instructables for a few days at a time.

If I were a newbie to this website, I'd probably never come back. 8-/

i used firefox and got it 4 days ago

Yep I am seeing this security message too

You need to look at it.

I get similar messages on Firefox but only when i'm trying to view the full size image that has been uploaded to instructables.

Here is the warning Firefox gives. Though you'll probably see it if you try to view the full sized image. Oddly enough i had to revert to the older uploaded to get the image uploaded. They must be working on the system.

I don't know why you or the OP has got these messages.... but I don't see a big threat (nor have I got this message)...

If you look at the links you provided, they are to images... The first image is the Ace Logo (from the menu), and the second is the "woodworking" image, also from the menu, and the last is a square... a small grey square.

So, do I think there is a Malware threat? No, probably not.

Do programs designed to help you get it wrong sometimes? Yup.

I appreciate that both of you brought it to everyone's attention (just in case), but unless the staff comes back to say otherwise. I think we're all okay. :-)

Yeah, I agree that there's unlikely to be a malware threat, but it is really annoying to have a big red shouty box screaming at you whenever you're expecting to see an instructables page. Might put other people off from going on the website entirely, if it's a common problem, too.

Either way it'd be nice to be fixed :)

I started to receive the "instructables has malware" message today (never seen it before today). It would be a shame if people were put off by the message.

Yup. Me too. I'm using chrome as well.

I get it too via chromium.... (Linux version of chrome)

I got this message too. I can open instructables in Internet Explorer, but google chrome shows this warning. I visited the site a couple of times yesterday on chrome, and nothing happened. i hope they'll fix it. My mother doesn't trust this warning...

I too have received this warning page. I don't believe Instructables is full of malware either, but I had to click through at least 4 warning pages before I was able to get here. So the point is not that Instructables is untrustworthy, the point is that Chrome or Google, whoever is behind these warnings is making it annoyingly difficult to access the site. I'm not inclined to jump through hoops to get somewhere.
