Motion Sensitive Switch Answered

I'm trying to come up with a switch that activates when it is moved. Ultimately it would connected to a sound device and a small sample would be played every time the unit is picked up. Any suggestions on how I should go about doing this?

Would a "tilt" detector work ? Like a mercury switch. Or maybe you could use a magnetic reed switches (motion away from the magnet closes/opens the switch). Or do you mean it detects motion "outside of itself". In which case you have a few choices: IR, which is great at night, as there is no visible light source, but any form of light with IR in it, or any source of heat, could give a false positive. UV light gives a better more reliable sense, but is tied to line of sight. There are sonar devices too, but they get pretty pricey.

Well, you could take a sensor out of one of those toys that sense movement...
