Well we all have to start somewhere :-)

As much as I deal with electronics, and as much as I do with computers at work, I still feel uncomfortable about cracking open the case of my Gateway 4016. I have a slot for a fulsized HD and would love to install the spare one I have for use as a backup drive, but I will have to get over the fear first :-)

The last thing I need is for the only computer I have, to go down and become useless because I did "something".

Well, if your ready, try it. Just be VERY carful what you do. I have on many occasions almost fried mine, but supprisingly, it seems like its gonna take alot to fry. Just DO NOT get a static charge in the computer (u probly knew that) as it can fry the chips. I also think that if you have some knowledge of this kind of stuff that you'll be fine modding your pc. Good luck. And i am not responsible if ur pc gets wrecked bcuz i influinced u to try it. (just in case) lol. goog luck.

Well I guess I am skiddish because the last time I opened my "first" computer (IBM 8088 clone) I never got it to reboot again. AND never figured out exactly what went wrong with it.

Oh and I would NEVER blame anyone for something I did, even if they told me it was ok to do it.....if I DO it, it is my fault :-)

Look up how "old" an 8088 is. Well anyways, it was long overdue to die; and when it stopped being able to boot properly, I opened her up and unplugged the HD to see if the contacts had gone bad. Well, I didn't mark the plug/socket and it could be plugged in either of two ways....I must have plugged it in backwards and nothing worked after that. This was back in the days when a 10 MB HD was BIG, and cost more then many 80 GiG drives do now. The only reason I even cared was I had half a room full of software on 1.44 k floppies, and I couldn't use them on any other computer. The next one to come out, was the 80286, and the processor and everything was different.

Different computers use different configurations. Mine is a press and hold "on" button. I am not sure where you'd get the parts except maybe at a repair shop

If you aren't using the modem card, it need not be installed as far as I know.

You can probably check with the manufacturers online however, to make sure.

.  No. That was just a link to the specs for your computer. From there, you can decide what you want to upgrade.
.  If it has a 2.66GHz PentiumD*, I don't see much reason to upgrade the processor or overclock. If you need more power than that, you probably need a newer computer.
.  More RAM is usually your best bet for better performance.
