Not enough thread length?

When using the double threads for the first time I nearly ran out of thread before I manage to close the stitches. Is there any way to change the length of the thread in the middle of stitching, or if there isn't, any way to connect two threads should I ran out of threads?

If there is really no way to change the thread length after starting to stitch, is there some way I could estimate how long the thread needs to be?

Honestly, it's as simple as knotting off and starting again!

As far as estimation, I normally measure the edges I need to sew and multiply that length by 1.5 for running stitches and 2.5 for backstitching. It's not foolproof, but it does help.

Though keep in mind that sometimes this will leave you with a ridiculous length of thread to work with, so you may need to cut it into multiple pieces. :)

You can double the thread and knot both ends together, so the kneedle does not come out. I have my beginning sewing students do this until they get the hang of things.
