OG xbox drive into external usb drive??? Answered

It just so happens I have 3 OG xboxes sitting in my room and a netbook with a dead hard drive. I was wondering if there was a way to use one of the xbox drives and turn it into an external usb drive to plug into my netbook. Im familiar with hardware and what most things do, but I havent had much experience with electronics. Any ideas? Thanks for any input!

Purchase a suitable USB hard drive enclosure, which provides the necessary electronics. Plug hard drive into enclosure. Connect USB cable, plug in enclosure's power brick and turn on. Format the drive for use with your operating system. Done.

(Yes, you can get a "naked" adapter and build your own box. But complete enclosures are a fairly cheap item, so you won't save much money by doing so. And it really isn't worth the effort of homebrewing unless you're interested enough in that as a project to want to pay more.)

On the other hand: I just got a 1.5 terabyte external drive -- electronics, enclosure, and that huge drive -- for under $75. It may not be cost-effective to adapt your XBox drives unless you have an empty USB enclosure already on hand (or one that contains a smaller drive than the XBox drives, which might be worth upgrading.)

If the drive is physically compatiable then there should be no problem. Any compatible drive can be cleaned and formatted for whatever you want to use it for.

If you buy the transfer kit for moving from one hard drive to another, then you can use that cable and the driver disc that came with it on your PC to do this. I did it, but it has been a long time, so I don't know if there is something else I might have forgotten.
