Popup ads? Answered

I've noticed a return of a certain popup, which I'd seen a couple months ago. This one has popped up approx five times in the last 24 hours. I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.16.

It opens a small, empty window (firefox popup blocking?), which I didn't have a chance to capture--I clicked inside and it closed... But I did open the "view source" window before it closed, and here's the code:

<html><head><title>Empowering Your Opinions</title><script type="text/javascript">setTimeout(&apos;self.close()&apos;,(60*1000));function load_survey(){	window.open("http://survey.questionmarket.com/surv/444201/ai_start.php?site=2&from_aicode=27628437", "dlsurvey","toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes");	self.close();}</script></head><body style="margin:0px; "  TOPMARGIN="0" LEFTMARGIN="0" MARGINWIDTH="0" MARGINHEIGHT="0"><center><a href=# onClick="load_survey()"><img src=/static/opinion2-350x300-1l-eng-nul.gif border=0 width=350 height=300></a></center></body></html>

And...here's a new one. Occurred yesterday, as well. The popup "slides" from the left side of the scrn. A Safecount.net ad accompanies this in the upper right column. (Am I the only one who gets these? Should I just block all popups for ibles and forget about it?)

Technically, that's a floater; but, it still shouldn't be on the site. I'll look into it.

As usual, if you can identify the ad network, it really helps:

For whatever it's worth, I haven't run into this. I'm using Firefox on my Mac, and have _all_ pop-ups blocked. I don't _think_ Instructables itself makes use of pop-ups itself (hopefully Eric or Rachel will correct me), given that I've never gotten a message about a blocked pop-up from I'bles. You could suppress this locally, and reduce your annoyance, by blocking pop-ups unconditionaly. Of course, the feedback you've been providing on the topic has been quite complete, and undoubtedly useful to The Powers That Be.

Yes, instructables is on my popup exception list in Firefox... I could change that, but in this case it was probably useful to everyone...

Another one today (same window.) This time the banner ad itself was a broken image, so I just copied the URL of the banner:

Oh, sorry. I didn't grab the source, but the window has the same Empowering Your Opinions title.

Here's a closeup from the latest. The previous popup is identical, at least superficially. I'll try for the source next time (it has that self-close code, so getting both is a little rushed...)

I've got firebug now, so maybe that will tell me something next time.

The way ads are served on Instructables is actually quite complicated. So, even though you have the URL, that doesn't directly tell me which network is violating (knowingly, or unknowingly) our no pop-ups rule. What would really help me nail this one is to know what ads appears in the normal spots when this one showed up, and which networks they came from. The only way a pop-up could be called is if it was called from our normal spots at the same time a networked showed the ad that was supposed to be in that spot. When I see an ad that doesn't fit, I use Firebug to inspect the code, and I dig into the layers of javascript that call the actual ad. There can be multiple layers because if one network doesn't have an ad available, it might call another, and so on... However, from looking at the survey itself and guessing what product they are trying to gather information about, I've got a pretty good idea where it came from. So, thanks for that!

Does the larger screen capture image help at all? (Shorebank, and several google ads...)

I'm pretty sure it was coming from the same network as that Shorebank ad, so yes it does help.

Thank you very much for this information! We do not accept popup ads (we hate them too) and this is one that one of our advertisers seems to have snuck in without permission. WIth this info we should be able to determine which one, and smack them down!

It's back. Here's a screen cap... Over several months, this has popped up maybe 30 times (and only on instructables.) I don't know Instructables "official" policy on popups, but I don't like 'em. I don't block popups from Instructables.com, and this is the only one I've seen.
