Processing Metalls? Answered

Hi Jon,

I am thinking about buying an X-Carve 1000 or Shapeoko XXL. Can you say something about the possibilities about cutting and milling metals like aluminum or brass. Is it possible and which mashine would be better?

Regards Volker

Hi Volker,

Both of those machines can cut brass and aluminum as far as I know. Those are both soft metals that don't require liquid coolant systems to work, which is the limiting factor for this technology. Manage your expectations: sheets of aluminum and brass are no problem generally speaking, but when it comes to machining thick solid stock, you can run into overheating and mechanical stress issues with a prosumer machines like these.

I have a X-Carve 1000mm and LOVE it! You don't need to keep the machine stock. The nice thing is that you can grow with the machine. Many people on the forum order the basic machine and then modify it later for heavy duty work. Check out their forum for more information.
