Radio Shack exploded this morning Answered

In New York City, a Radio Shack exploded this morning. Well, to be more accurate, the sidewalk right in front of it exploded. A manhole explosion led to a transformer catching fire which led to 100 people being evacuated. So far, it looks like nobody was hurt, which is pretty amazing.

But still, a "manhole explosion"? They just explode now? I thought that only happened in Die Hard.

Anyone else wondering how someone knew when to take this picture, considering how fast the explosion was? Seems a little suspicious to me, unless that column of fire burned continuously.

Maybe a frame taken from the street cam?

With a resolution like that and not aimed at an intertsection? Seems improbable.

This clip is not of the same place but if you have gas pipes and other stuff to burn...  Yep, people do take a smoke break watching these things.

I hate the annoying employee's that hang up on you if they don't know what a NPN transistor is or if they have one. You applied and work at an electronics store, you'd better know what electronic parts are and what they are for.

I think that is why they hid them away in a little drawer in the back of the store,  hoping they could phase out having to carry "electronic parts" in a store for "electronic parts"  *sigh*

They have a new slogan:
"You've got questions?    We tell you to sod off......"

I used to work at a Radio Shack, and we actually had to do training on the parts.  It wasn't terribly in depth, but it did get you familiar with all of the parts and their purposes.  It seems like the training is no longer required, because the employees I see in the stores know very little about them.

Yeah sorry, no offense to those trained in the past;  I just know the present day local one's couldn't point out the difference between a triac and tripod.

No offense taken.  I was just pointing out how disappointing it is that they no longer seem to require training on what used to be the biggest reason to go to their stores.

I suppose because us Makers are so few in number anymore.  Or we get our stuff online and cheaper?  I still like to have a place to go to in case I need a 4017 decade counter for a project.....even the "other" electronics store we had in the area (gone so long I can't remember the name) has folded.

I remember once when I was a local RS and had forgotten Ohm's law. It took half an hour for the cashier to call his friend, who then called his other friend, who told the cashier's friend, who then told the cashier, who then told me. All I wanted was a resistor.

Hey hey hey!! Dont be hating!!
A: they are not extended warranties, they are protection plans. Some are good, some arent. The ones on GPS, home and car audio, and home theatre equipment fricken rock, the others marginally to incredibly less so.
B: REWARD ZONE FTW hehe, what other electronics retailer does that?

Yeah, I want an extended warranty, that way when the piece of junk I bought there falls apart a week later I can pay them to not fix it, rather than it simply sitting in my house where I can not fix it.

Yeah, have them park that Geekmobile in the driveway, to announce to the world that you are a noob and can't figure out that the plug on the end of the cord goes into that rectangular shaped thing on the wall.
