Replacing IC's with components Answered

It it possible to use simple components, arranged properly, in order to replicate the use of a simple IC, such as the 555 or LM386? If so, where could I find diagrams of the internal electronics? Google has turned up nothing so far...

Thanks!

IC internal circuits are usually proprietary designs but it if you could come up with a design with 25 transistors, 2 diodes and 15 resistors or so, you may have your own 555 timer chip. And you might want to find a shrink ray machine too.
