Can someone explain to me how a Schmitt trigger works like I'm a 5 year old?

What do you mean ? It compares its input with a reference, if the input is less than the reference it stays in one state, if its more than the reference, if changes state.


If its more than the reference - some percentage, it stays in the same state, if its less than (reference-some percentage) it changes state.

The key thing is the action of the term "some percentage", because that stops the output dickering around with signals "close to" the reference.
