See data on credit card with rust Answered

Want to see the information on the magnetic strip in your credit card? Just take some fine rust powder and blow it onto the card to see the magnetic bands that get picked up by card readers. This won't help you read the information any better, but it does show you the hidden world in magnetic cards and that's pretty sweet.

Years ago, there was a UK TV series called "The Secret Life of...", hosted by Hero of Making Tim Hunkin.

There was an episode where he and his assistant covered a length of stickytape in rust he'd filed of a lump of old steel, and used it in place of the "proper" tape in a reel-to-reel recorder.

It wasn't hi-fi, but the playback was recognisable.

Was that"The Secret Life of Machines"?  I remember that, was very cool.

The beardy chap is Rex Garrod, a major competitor in the UK Robot Wars, and special effects designer (he created children's TV character "Brum").

Both men are fairly local to me.

And I live about 15 miles from it.

Are you North, South or West of the pier?

Where does Tim Hunkin fit in here? I understood he was also very involved both in the secret life, and Brum, as well as the Brighton Pier?! His website is outstanding. Good nerdy stuff here, thanks!
