Should we have "Advanced Searching" on Instructables? Answered

Picture of

I'm posting this topic to bring forth the idea of having advanced search capabilities on Instuctables.

If anyone has visited a member who has amassed a huge number of instructables, you'll notice that using the "next" button is rather inefficient for searching. If you don't know what I mean, go to Kitemans page and search for the first instructable he wrote.

There are also times where you are looking for a specific instructable written by a member and would therefore need a method to do so, especially when some members have written over 100 instructables.

There may be a specific forum topic, group, guide, or question/answer that you're looking for, and again, you'd need a way to search these only.

I'm sure I'm missing a few examples, so feel free to throw in your 2 cents regarding advanced searching on Instructables, and maybe the staff might implement it for us.

Thanks, canucksgirl

These are some great ideas guys, and I'm making a note of all of them.

You'll be happy to know that all these ideas have been expressed and discussed in-house and it's really just a matter of bandwidth allocation for our Development Team. They're a busy bunch, breaking the site and trying to make it better.

Keep those ideas coming, we want to know what you'd like to see!

Yes! Another good reason for needing Advanced Search capabilities.

I would like an option for seeing all the thumbnails on a single (long) page, so that I could scan down them.

Do you mean a "view all" option for a members instructables? ;)

what about a member search, so you can find people.

Technically, if you know the username of the member you are looking for, you can use the search box (right end of the menu bar) to find whomever you're looking for. Just type in their username and click on "go". If you're not finding the member, it may be a spelling issue.

Nonetheless, I'm hoping that staff will take notice of this topic, as there are a number of members (like me) who feel that we should have more "advanced" capabilities for searches.

If you know their user name, you can type the address in directly; www.instructables.com/member/yourfriendsname

I was thinking that we might need this advanced search method to appear in 2 places. The first place could be on the members page (which would satisfy searching a members instructables when they have over 100). The other area should be on a specific "advanced search page", where you'd have more options to choose from (either with a drop down menu selection, or by check box selection).
