Spelling 101 Answered

Okay, I'm going to cut straight to the chase here, people NEED to use spell check on their Instructables I've seen a butt load of crappy ones that I can't even understand, let alone read (not mentioning any names *cough* Knex *cough*). Okay so here's some helpful hints.

1.MICROSOFT WORD
I mean holy crap is this elementary copy and paste it from Instructable into word then hit spell check, I know it doesn't really work for grammar but its better than nothing.

2. Dictionary Tooltip If you have Firefox which you should, this is just a spell checker that works in Firefox.

Agreed. (But I'm the sort of person that uses full and correct language and punctuation in text messages, emails and the (rare times) I use instant messageboards.) Oh, and "color" has a "u" in it ...

Is it irony that on a post ranting about using correct spelling that you used "your" wrong? It should be "you're" as in "you are." Spelling and there/their/they're are peeves of mine also.

I do it too, and it actually goes reasonably quick when using T9/Word, because the dictionaries they use (at least on my phone) have few to no acronyms and abbreviations. And my phone has no option for adding extra words. So it works. I'm still a relatively slow texter, but that because i just suck at the whole keypad typing thing; I would still be just as slow if I used abbreviations and such.

You missed the point of my point - if your gonna use chat abbreviations, they yes, T9 does suck since it mostly has 'real' words in its dictionary, but when you don't use chat abbreviations, like me, it actually works pretty well.

Spelling bad is one thing (that I can't stand); spelling bad and then apologizing in the same comment/Instructable/topic for the bad spelling is another. Take the time to use spell check. Personally, spelling can make a big difference to me whether I think an Instructable is quality or not.

royalestel (author)royalestel2007-07-25

No seriously, I try to get the spelling and grammar right in my instructables (typos notwithstanding) but sometimes in the forum posts it just doesn't seem worth it to go back and fix a typo that doesn't obscure the intended meaning. Not really sure why Squid Labs doesn't let us edit posts.

Everybody who isn't American? Everybody who cares about the way they express themselves? If you switch to Firefox as your browser (as I did recently), you'll find that, by installing the dictionary options, everything you type will be automatically spell-checked. (I don't know if it checks grammar, but even my six-year-old knows that you end a question with a question mark.)
