Substituting water with milk when cooking... Answered

I often see recommendations for replacing water with milk, cream, or maybe something non-dairy. Are there any definitive instances when you shouldn't substitute water with a milk or cream in a recipe?


if water is the main ingredient or is used in a method of cooking, like boiling noodles for spaghetti you wouldnt want to substitute milk for water because the milk will curdle and you will end up with a mess.

No problem with the cocoa - you should get a nicer drink!

Good cooking starts with following recipes until you build confidence and understanding of what tastes good to you - then you can get a bit experimental.

Your end result will be a creamy consistency so if this fits your recipe then it's probably OK.

I can't however think of a circumstance where I would want to divert from a recipe and replace water with milk.

Can you give an example.

Well, I ain't much of a cook, so I rarely stray from recipes, unless it's hot cocoa. So that's all I can come up with. My hot cocoa labeling instructs me to add hot water, but I use milk. I'm a renegade like that.
