The bernoullivator Answered

So I was chatting away on an 'ible in comments and had an idea... Basically it's a replacement for elevators that works on bernoullis principle, the whole idea is just to make a nicer world for people in tall buildings... The idea is taking an elevator shaft, two massive fans and some people, so you get your two fans and alot of air blowing up the shaft, now on the inside handles are added beside the doors and buttons for opening from the inside of the shaft, the original doors are given rubber seals, to add efficiency and not deafen the people outside. The down one uses a slightly lower flow of air to create a controlled descent speed. The top and bottom floors have handles leading to the doors for those that made a woopsy, and big mesh grids to stop them... This would allow for more people to travel through one shaft than in a single box as noone stops at unneeded floors, also in smaller buildings with large elevator travel, there's the possibility of both better energy efficiency and faster travel between floors, in theory wheelchair users could use it too, I think, they may need to have a mini parachute... It wouldn't be super costly to do when you think of the cost represented by the highly complicated systems used in elevators... Also think jsut how cool everyone who used it would feel, the tech exists in parachute simulators, basically small scale productions of this...

I think the idea is cool, but to remain in one floor, the fans would have to keep a certain pace until the people are off, or another floor is requested. There would be some issues with stability... What happens when the power goes out? It would take a hefty power generator to keep some fans going. The current models are good I suppose. I myself am terrified of elevators.... Although, the simple experience, or just knowledge that you're being pushed up by a fan, would be awesome!

Well yeah... it's all about the happy factor, i think fan resistance could be a smart idea for emergency elevator braking though, it's unpowered, or powered and works the same way as a rowing machine or those freefall things that 'catch' you at the very end. The idea is people are going up at a speed that is just slow enough for them to catch their floor and hop off, not really slow... After all it's just a crazy pipedream idea but a nice one...

It just seems unwieldy. What happens if some kids get into it? People would also have to learn to use it safely. You don't have to learn to use an elevator.

Umm A simple ele-guard and cameras, should the kids get stuck, at least they can't hit all the buttons, like a normal elevator...

You couldn't wear hats, although ladies in skirts would tend to be distracting.....some people like to write notes while riding the elevator.....that would be difficult too (rats, dropped my Blackberry, as he watches it disappear upward....)

Ladies in skirts would also have a tendency to overtake due to the skirt, making the distraction worse...

seems impractical the power to lift 10+ people would be so immense that it is almost impossible

I've seen a video of 8 in one of those trainers, looked alright to me...

hmmm the weight of the carridge adds a good 1k++ lbs

No carriage needed, that's the point... People coem and go as and when they like, thankfully it would be pretty self regulating in practice, too many people would make it slower instead of just falling...

Thats a really awsomeness Idea. Try making a small scall on first to get all the bugs out. But really cool tho.

That's the thing small scale nes already exist, up to twenty feet tall they're used to train freefall parachutists

Well if you use a action figure as a test human you can you some clear piping and get a big enough fan to push him and the thing he would be standing on. Just trying to help.

Oh right, it's just the fact that it's done already means the prototypes exist as is...

I think seeing how far the things would go, like what the height limit before it starts being impractical...

Yeah. I mean I have an idea for the whole thing but I don't know how how and if it would work.

Well, we could take a box and put some pots and a bargraph and a few buttons with a microcomputer in it, it would be conected to the fan so we can increase the power and decrease the power to get it at the right level to be able push the disc with the action figure up and down so it can get to the door. If we could write a program that will make it go up and tell it to stop increaseing the fan to level with the door. "We" means anyone or you. or me. (ha ha)

its an interesting idea, but what happens if the power goes out?

I was thinking about that, I think a massive power pack or generator would be in order, that runs long enough to slowly power down and lower everyone safely to the ground floor...

makes sense. possibly a cable from the top of the box and when the power levels drop or completely stop, the cable locks. and holds it
