Thoughts on the new update? Answered

There is a new update as all of you will have probably noticed by now.
I've got my own views on the update.  [I miss the orange colour...]
But, I wanted to now what the large community at Instuctables thinks about the updated home page.
So... Please comment about what you think!

Being nice is hard to do when the line is so fine its invisible and keeps moving. I keep thinking of communist Russia and the KGB for some reason, not sure why.

First they came for the K'nexers, and I did not speak out because I was not a K'nexer.

Then they came for the noobs, and I did not speak out because I was not a noob.

Then they came for the criticizers, and I did not speak out because I was not a criticizer.

Then they came for me, and there was nobody to speak for me.

HQ have asked elsewhere that feedback on the changes be sent to service[at]instructables[dot]com.

Of course the problem with that is that it has been asked in a thread that is no longer visible in the lists unless you know how to get to it (the link is there so people can take a look at the request you mentioned not to encorage dissent in the ranks).
Like it or not this is something that has a considerable impact on the site & people want to discuss it, you never know if it is allowed to go on long enough someone may have something positive to say.

This is interesting:-

Which is why I repeated the request here.

I missed a lot (all) of yesterday's posts, but that thread was hidden for a reason, and continually resurrecting it is not helping much.

Have you made your feelings known via the email address?

(Amazing how many people forget that this is not a public place, but a private place to which the public are given conditional access.)

Sorry I understood that the thread was hidden because of certain comments that were deemed to be in violation of the "be nice" policy referring to interns & other members.
I think it was a shame that this happened but have become used to seeing otherwise interesting & lively discussions descend into silliness although I must say I haven’t noticed many of them getting deleted no matter how personal they seemed to be getting.

Whilst I am in full support of people being protected from abuse quite why those comments could not simply have been deleted & the authors contacted off site is beyond me.

If the thread was hidden because it was decided people should not have any say or indeed "Feedback" then perhaps it’s time to change the title from Forums to something more in keeping like "Approved Topics".

I happen to believe that Instructables is one of the best sites I have ever come across in many years of using the web, I spent quite a few years in IT & still act as a support consultant part of my job was in business systems development including the company internet, intranet & extranet sites & am more than aware that on occasion ideas that seem great at first can turn out to be a mistake, often the best way to gauge this is by user feedback therefore it should be encouraged not silenced.

I have emailed my feelings to the supplied address to which I received a reply a few minutes ago in it I also pointed out that even though the discussion did contain a few ill conceived comments the bulk of them were well intentioned "Feedback" about peoples MEMBERS reactions to the new look of the site & should therefore not be dismissed out of hand.

"but have become used to seeing otherwise interesting & lively discussions descend into silliness "

I still haven't gotten used to it, and frankly it destroys much of the utility of the forum.

I agree with you entirely, far too often I have been enjoying a thread just for it to fall apart just as it is getting interesting.
I enjoy a good laugh as much as anyone in fact I even wanted to start an open mic night in my pub but the pub co put a stop to it but I do feel it's a shame when a good thread breaks down into a mess of jokey banter.

I miss the color but what I don't like the most is how the featured are now shown. Of course no one asked me before the change so I guess I'll deal with it.

Yeah that what I don't like as well but the new mini pictures that change are annoying to view on my netbook screen but at least there's still the great content, hidden, but still there...
